Alexis Gering started her teaching career in 2006 and joined Pearson Online Academy in 2020. She teaches English to tenth graders and says, “The most rewarding part of my job is working with the students and witnessing their personal and academic growth.”
Why She Became a Teacher
According to Ms. Gering, “I followed in the footsteps of my mother. As a young child, I spent a lot of time in her classroom and saw the impact she had. I wanted to make the same impact.
“I knew I had a passion for teaching and sharing my love of literature and writing. There are so many elements to English. My goal is for students to develop a love/like for the subject and find something to enjoy and/or appreciate about it.”

“I love teaching online because it provides the opportunity to individualize instruction,” says Ms. Gering. “I foster engagement by building relationships with my students and getting to know them as people first. I believe that students who feel safe and cared about will be more engaged.
“Students are encouraged to interact and work together in on-camera LiveLesson® sessions. Each session begins with sharing—something positive, weekend activities, etc. This allows students to become comfortable with one another and see our virtual classroom as a community.
“My students like to discuss the literature we read and are open about their feelings and interpretations. I appreciate the raw discussions. In LiveLesson sessions we have healthy debates that serve as confirmation that students are enjoying the reading selections, and it reminds them that differing perspectives are okay.”

Ms. Gering’s Personal Interests
Says Ms. Gering, “Outside of teaching, I love spending time with my family, relaxing with a good book, and finding creative outlets. I enjoy crafting, art projects, and anything that lets me be hands-on and imaginative. I’m a proud Michigander at heart, so even though I no longer live there, I love exploring local traditions, foods, and places that remind me of home.”
Students here learn to foster relationships with staff and peers, they learn to self-advocate, and they grow academically and socially.
