Leah Guillory started teaching in 1999 and joined Pearson Online Academy in 2021. She teaches English and honors English to students in grade 11. 

Why She Became a Teacher

According to Ms. Guillory, she became a teacher “to nurture the interests and intellectual growth of young adults and to share my enthusiastic joy of learning and teaching with parents, colleagues, and students—as well as with the larger educational community.

“Pearson Online Academy is a wonderful environment in which to teach young adults. Staff and management are very positive and supportive. I have the support to be as enthusiastic, creative, and thoughtful as I need to be to assist students [in being] successful.”

To foster student engagement with courses and to encourage interaction among students, Ms. Guillory says, “I utilize  Mintimeter, Google Jamboard, AnswerGarden, Kahoot!, Quizizz, Pear Deck, Google slides, Google sheets, and ice breakers. I also really like to use the Zoom annotation tools.” Her favorite classroom activity is “Take One and Pass It On,” which nurtures social-emotional learning.

In her free time, Ms. Guillory enjoys snorkeling, deep-sea diving, and cleaning the ocean.
