Students worldwide use online summer school as a pathway to enrichment, credit recovery, early graduation

Baltimore, MD (April 5, 2017)—Online summer school enrollment is now open to K-12 students everywhere; offered by Pearson Online Academy, the U.S.-based accredited virtual private school serving students worldwide. Families are invited to attend an online information session to learn more about the benefits of online summer school.

Pearson Online Academy summer school students stay engaged academically while enjoying the freedom of summer. With more than 100 online courses - including NCAA eligible courses - flexible start dates, and enrichment opportunities, Pearson Online Academy's online summer school is an option for students interested in earning necessary credit, exploring fresh interests, and building new skills. Students also can use the innovative online summer program as a pathway to early graduation.

“My daughter needed to take one summer class to graduate a semester early,” said Chicago, IL, resident Michelle Wadzinski, whose daughter Eva took Physics in online summer school and earned her diploma in December, a semester early. “For summer school, families can’t beat Pearson Online Academy. Students are more open to online summer school because it means they have flexibility and don't have to sit in a physical classroom over the summer. It keeps learning and good study habits alive,” Wadzinski said.

In online summer school, students can accelerate their learning or take advantage of the one-on-one support from teachers while focusing on fewer, key classes. Retaining knowledge and continuing the learning curve from the previous school year is important, according to Pearson Online Academy teacher Shannon Burgess, who started in a traditional classroom 14 years ago and transitioned to teaching middle and high school English online in 2011.

“I enjoy teaching students from different backgrounds, school types, and experiences,” said Burgess, who has taught online summer school to students from as far as China. “Students who want a U.S.-based diploma or want to attend university here, who are expat or military families, and kids who want the flexibility to attend school online while traveling with their parents thrive in online summer school.”

Online summer school allowed Samantha Karns, an Pearson Online Academy 10th grader who lives in Ellicottville, NY, to advance in Math. “Utilizing online summer school, she’s now taking pre-calculus as a sophomore and will take AP calculus classes her junior and senior year. She hopes to go to college to major in Math,” said her mother Jennifer Karns. Samantha added, “The teachers want to help you succeed. I could call, email, or find my teacher in their LiveLesson room whenever I had a question on the material.”

Among Pearson Online Academy’s 2016 summer school enrollments, 57 percent of students attended brick and mortar schools throughout the traditional school year, including the Abernathy family in Catonsville, MD, whose middle school daughter Myla enrolled in Math and Spanish the past two summers. Myla enjoyed having classmates from different areas.

“My daughter interacted with kids around the world,” added Wadzinski. “That exposure expanded her mind and put her in touch with kids from all over, which was pretty cool.”

The most popular summer school subjects at Pearson Online Academy include Math and English, followed by the “Summer Smarts” enrichment courses.

Families can choose their student’s start date (June 6, 13, 20, and 27; July 5 and 11), ensuring courses don’t interfere with summer plans. The last day of classes, regardless of start date, is August 8. Enrollment discounts may also apply (purchases must be made by phone to receive discounts):
