Gifted & Talented Program: Middle School

Gifted and talented students in our full-time private middle school program need new challenges to continue developing their strengths. Our gifted courses* for grades 6–8 strengthen higher-level thinking skills and are taught by teachers who are experts in their field. These courses include:

  • Language Arts
  • Literature
  • Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry
  • Science

“Twice-exceptional” full-time students who may be gifted in one subject but need special help in another, work with our gifted and talented team to create customized programs to address both strengths and challenges.

Support for Online Middle School Students

Private middle school students at Pearson Online Academy become more independent and start to work directly with highly qualified subject area teachers for their courses, but they remain under the guidance of a counselor or an advisory teacher for overall support. They actively participate in teacher-led virtual instruction and review sessions via our LiveLesson® tool*, providing not only more specific instructional assistance, but also the opportunity to communicate and work with their peers across the world.

What to Expect

Hours Spent Learning A minimum of 30 hours per week.
Hours Spent On The Computer About 75–80 percent of the school day. Classes blend both online and off-line work.
Level of Scheduling Flexibility A prescribed schedule is provided. Students work with teachers as needed to create alternate schedules that accommodate their individual needs.
Number of Teachers Students have subject-specific teachers and a homeroom or advisory teacher who monitors and assists with the student’s performance across all subjects. A school counselor is also available.

Course Electives and Activities

Online private middle school students vary their education with exposure to many different subjects and activities in the middle school curriculum. They choose from a wide range of elective courses and become involved in the variety of virtual clubs and activities. They can join clubs that enrich them in whole new ways such as competing in Mathematical Olympiads.

Additionally, gifted students have access to high school level courses and can begin to earn high school credit with their counselor’s approval.

* To verify learning, teachers conduct curriculum-based assessments by phone for all core courses. This assessment must be completed prior to the end date of each course and is required for a student to receive course credit. Students who do not complete the curriculum-based assessment call will not earn course credit.
